Queridos amigos,
El pasado viernes, día 26, de la mano del Club calceatense «Sampol», he realizado una presentación de Appalachian Trail y del libro «Basajaun en el Sendero de los Apalaches» en el magnífico Salón de Actos de la Oficina de Turismo de Santo Domingo de la Calzada, La Rioja (España).
Esta bellísima localidad de unos 6500 habitantes es un hito en el Camino de Santiago Francés, con edificios señoriales entre los que destaca la Catedral del Salvador, cuyos orígenes datan del siglo XII. En su interior, lo que más llama la atención es el gallinero gótico del siglo XV, donde viven un gallo y una gallina vivos en recuerdo del milagro del joven peregrino alemán Hugonell, quien fuera acusado de robo y ahorcado injustamente, allá por el siglo XIV. Los padres le acompañaban en su peregrinaje y nada pudieron hacer para impedir el ahorcamiento de su hijo, salvo rezar a Santiago. Al acercarse al cuerpo ahorcado para despedirse pueden oír asombrados cómo este les habla desde la horca y les dice que está vivo por la gracia del Santo. Son numerosas las construcciones de interés que aloja la ciudad, cada una de ellas impregnada de historia. Dejo aquí una pequeña lista:
- La Cárcel Real
- Torre barroca exenta
- La Muralla
- El Convento de San Francisco
- Abadía Cisterciense
- El Ayuntamiento
- La Alhóndiga
- Casa de la Cofradía del Santo y albergue de peregrinos
Edificios emblemáticos todos ellos que el turista debe visitar, con mayor motivo si se trata de un peregrino a Santiago de Compostela.
Hecha esta breve reseña de la ciudad, quiero agradecer la atención recibida por la Junta Directiva del Club y del numeroso público asistente, algo que proporciona mucho ánimo para seguir adelante con este proyecto en el que estoy inmerso.

Last Friday, the 26th, with the help of the Calceatense Club "Sampol", I made a presentation of the Appalachian Trail and the book "Basajaun en el Sendero de los Apalaches" in the magnificent Assembly Hall of the Tourist Office of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, La Rioja (Spain).
This beautiful town of about 6500 inhabitants is a landmark on the French Way of St. James, with stately buildings including the Cathedral of the Saviour, whose origins date back to the 12th century. Inside, the most striking feature is the 15th century Gothic henhouse, where a live cockerel and hen live in memory of the miracle of the young German pilgrim Hugonell, who was accused of theft and unjustly hanged, back in the 14th century. The parents accompanied him on his pilgrimage and could do nothing to prevent their son's hanging, except pray to Santiago. As they approached the hanged body to say goodbye, they were astonished to hear him speak to them from the gallows and tell them that he was alive by the grace of the Saint. There are numerous interesting buildings in the city, each one of them steeped in history. Here is a short list:
- The Royal Prison
- Free-standing baroque tower
- The Wall
- The Convent of San Francisco
- Cistercian Abbey
- The Town Hall
- The Alhóndiga
- House of the Brotherhood of the Saint and Pilgrims' Hostel
All of them are emblematic buildings that tourists should visit, especially if they are pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela.
Having made this brief review of the city, I would like to thank the attention received by the Board of Directors of the Club and the large audience, something that provides much encouragement to move forward with this project in which I am immersed.
